This song is in 9/8 time, which is an unusual time signature, as hymns often are. You can kind of think of it as 6/8 time with an extra half measure added on to every measure. The cadence and the way you count is the same as 6/8, you just count to 9 instead of 6.
In practice, this time signature doesn’t make this song any more difficult to play than a song in 6/8, it just causes you to pay attention to where the chord changes are and when the vocal lines come in.
